Online Songwriting & Music Lessons
Hi! I’m Grace
If you'd like to write a song, I can help!
I've taught songwriting to hundreds of students over the past 17 years in person in Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Dallas and online lessons to students in NYC, San Francisco, Seattle, Houston, and Florida.
A graduate of the acclaimed jazz program at the University of North Texas, my extensive teaching experience and continued education in the creative process, Feldenkrais, flow states, neuroscience, play, and experiential learning, is woven throughout my approach.
Over 17 years of experience guiding student’s long term learning trajectories.

WHAT PARENTS ARE SAYING ABOUT
MUSIC LESSONS WITH GRACE:
-
Beyond being just a lovely human, Grace is an unusually gifted music teacher. For more than four years, she has taught my daughter songwriting, ukulele, guitar, and voice. Grace’s deep experience in music and music education is apparent, but what makes her one of a kind is her radiant enthusiasm for what makes each of her students special. For her teaching is a very collaborative experience: she always finds a balance between building on my daughter’s own musical voice and interests while also setting clear, supportive expectations that she progress her instrument playing and songwriting in ways that will help her grow as a musician.

My son at 12 years old, like many boys his age, had trouble focusing on a project (in this case an original song) where he was asked to work beyond what came to him easily. He could be stubborn, would often get discouraged and quit, but Grace nudged him along, was patient, encouraging, and really listened to his needs. The result was a great song that Grace requested he get the chance to record. It really built his confidence. He is now in the music composition program at SUNY Purchase. Thank you Grace!

For 4 years, Grace taught our daughter guitar and voice. Our daughter’s strumming skills and singing are getting quite good but the real genius of Grace is the confidence, creativity and joy that she inspires. Our daughter is proud of her talent and eager to work hard. That motivation is sustained by a teacher as skilled, patient and kind a teacher as Grace. Our daughter will forever be shaped by Grace’s tutelage and friendship.

Grace worked with our daughter on piano and voice. She encouraged our daughter's creativity in songwriting with zero patronizing. Our kid looked forward to her lessons and we still watch videos of her performing her own songs she created with Grace with awe at what they accomplished together.

Grace is a gift. An implausibly on-the-nose named person. A terrific musician and wonderful teacher, with a thoughtful, sensitive approach. Our son came to her with a lingering bad taste for music from a well intentioned but rigid teacher who wanted to teach him into a corner that was not right for him. Instead of enforcing a dogmatic method, Grace coaxed him to find his own musicality. We're grateful for her mentorship, partnership, and collaboration.

Our daughter started piano lessons with Grace when she was six, and from her first lesson, Grace immediately established a rapport. Grace is warm and friendly and made the lessons fun and rewarding. It’s amazing how she motivated our daughter to focus, practice and exercise her creativity (and it’s amazing how much our daughter’s musical skills developed).

Grace is a talented, passionate and inspiring teacher. She has changed our daughter’s life in so many ways. She has helped foster confidence and creativity and an incredible amount of fun as our daughter learns to sing and play the ukulele. Grace has deep respect for students and their process in learning and this shines through in every lesson. We absolutely adore Grace.

My songwriting method:
I teach songwriting in a PROCESS first method, meaning it isn’t about the end results — it is about the action of writing a song NOW. I intentionally help my students write an abundance of songs. Focusing on process and abundance (instead of on whether or not it is “good” or “bad”) helps students manage their ego, fear, and intimidation during the creative process. It restores joy, play, curiosity, and fun to songwriting!
Through this method, I have witnessed my students, many whom start out writing silly songs or afraid of writing a song, begin to organically write powerful songs they’re proud of that express something personal and meaningful to them.
It is only through the act of making work that we get to know ourselves as creators.
Song written with Grace - ages 5-11
All songs were written and performed by learning students of varying skill levels, including absolute beginners.
Songs written with Grace - ages 12+
All songs were written and performed by learning students, 12 and older, of varying skill levels.
Several of the song recordings are from a week long creativity day camp, where students wrote and recorded new song demo every day of camp!
When I work with groups or older children, I love to encourage students to experiment! Somtimes this looks like playing games, making “bad” work on purpose, and trying on unfamiliar roles in the songwriting process: the bass player writing the lyrics, the guitarist coming up with the groove, the singer picking chords, the drummer singing a melody - that kind of thing.
